Back in 1909, Henry Ford said that a customer can have a car “painted any color that he wants, so long as it is black.” For a long time in the Hamptons, all contemporary houses were white (after Gwathmey and his imitators), inside and out. Now, though, a welcome trend is to paint the exterior of new and older modern houses black. It looks fresh, bold, and updated.

Bad news, though, for people complaining about mostly white interiors. They’re not going anywhere. For whatever reason — the quality of the light? the fact that they’re mostly used in summer? they remind people of the beach? — all white interiors are a Hamptons classic.

So it is with an almost-new (2019) build in Montauk’s Hither Hills. Black on the outside, white on the inside, with plenty of texture to give interest instead of color, the four-bedroom, set on a standard-for-the-area 0.4 of an acre, is asking $6.995 million. Listing agents are Greg Burns, Ryan Burns, and Matt Burns at Compass.

The 3,650 square foot house, designed by New York-based architect Daniel Romualdez (who owns a compound of old fisherman’s cottages in Montauk), offers sweeping ocean views and plenty of imaginative touches. To wit: there is no backsplash between the kitchen counters and the upper cabinets. Instead, there’s a ribbon of windows. The kitchen opens to a second story deck, perfect for summer dining and entertaining. There are four bedrooms, three full and three half bathrooms. The bathrooms are each unique, punctuated by peppy modern tilework.

The ground floor family room is where the action happens in summer. The room, boasting custom-designed millwork, leads out to a gunite pool and pool house. And for a quiet time reading a summer blockbuster novel or grilling the day’s catch, there is an additional courtyard with an outdoor kitchen and spa. And yes, naturally the pool house is painted black.
